The essence
A square forms when two planets sit about 90 degrees apart, usually within an orb of six to eight degrees. It is a hard aspect, one that produces pressure rather than flow. The planets normally fall in signs of the same modality but different elements and opposite polarity: fire squares water and earth, and air squares earth and water. They share a pace but not a language.
The square divides the circle into four equal parts, and you can watch it in the sky every month. The first and last quarter Moons are squares between the Sun and Moon, the moments in the cycle when something has to be decided or released. Ptolemy counted the square among the classic aspects, and Hellenistic astrologers, who called it the tetragon, mostly read it as conflict.
Modern astrologers see more in it. A square creates internal pressure that won't let you coast. It asks you to choose, to build skill, and to make room for two needs that don't naturally fit.
