The Eight Characters

Long before the twelve zodiac signs travelled west, Chinese astrologers were reading something quieter and more exact. Four pillars — year, month, day, and hour — each pair one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches. Those eight characters map how wood, fire, earth, metal, and water are woven through you, and name your Day Master: the element you are made of.

The Year Begins When the Sun Says So

Here is the accuracy most calculators quietly skip: the Chinese year does not begin on January 1st, or even at the lunar new year — it begins at Lichun, the moment the Sun reaches 315°, and that instant drifts a little every year. We compute the real crossing from the Sun itself, so a February — or even late-January — birth is placed in its true animal year, not the one the calendar assumes.

What is BaZi, or the Four Pillars of Destiny?

BaZi — literally the eight characters — is the heart of Chinese astrology. From the exact year, month, day, and hour of your birth it draws four pillars, each a pairing of one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches. Together those eight characters map the balance of the five elements in your nature and name your Day Master, the single element that stands for your core self.

How is Chinese astrology different from my Western zodiac sign?

Your Western sign comes from where the Sun sat along the ecliptic when you were born. Chinese astrology reads a different clock: a sixty-year cycle of stems and branches turning through the year, the month, the day, and the two-hour period of your birth. Rather than one sign, you receive four pillars and a portrait of how wood, fire, earth, metal, and water are woven — and missing — in you.

Why does the Chinese year start in February, not January?

The BaZi year does not begin at the calendar new year or even at the lunar new year — it begins at Lichun, the solar term when the Sun reaches 315 degrees of celestial longitude, usually around February 4th. Because that instant drifts a little every year, a January or early-February birth can belong to the previous animal year. We compute the true crossing from the Sun's real position, so your year pillar is exact.

What is a Day Master?

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the element and polarity that represent you at your core. If your year pillar speaks of your outer world and your month pillar of your work and roots, the Day Master is simply you: the tall oak or the climbing vine, the blazing sun or the candle flame. Do I need my exact birth time?

Your year, month, and day pillars are set by the date and place alone, so your chart is meaningful without a birth time. The hour pillar — the pillar of legacy and what you leave behind — is the one piece that needs the clock. If you do not know your time, we simply leave that pillar open; the other three still tell most of the story.
