More than your animal

What a Chinese astrologer actually casts, and when their year really begins.

The eight characters

Four pillars, one chart

Long before the twelve zodiac signs travelled west, Chinese astrologers were reading something quieter and more exact. Each of four pillars, for the year, month, day and hour of your birth, pairs one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches. Those eight characters show how wood, fire, earth, metal and water move through you, and the stem of your day pillar is you. Read about BaZi.

The solar new year

The year begins when the Sun says so

The Chinese year does not begin on January 1, or even at the lunar new year. It begins at Lichun, the moment the Sun reaches 315°, around February 4, and that instant shifts a little every year. Born in January or early February? You may belong to the animal before your calendar year. This calculator finds the exact moment from the Sun’s real position. More on Lichun.

Chinese astrology, answered

What is BaZi, or the Four Pillars of Destiny?

BaZi means "eight characters," and it sits at the heart of Chinese astrology. Using the exact year, month, day, and hour of your birth, it builds four pillars. Each pillar pairs one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches. Read together, those eight characters show how the five elements are balanced in your nature. They also name your Day Master, the single element that stands for your core self.

How is Chinese astrology different from my Western zodiac sign?

Your Western sign comes from where the Sun sat along the ecliptic when you were born. Chinese astrology keeps a different clock. It uses a sixty-year cycle of stems and branches that moves through the year, the month, the day, and even the two-hour window of your birth. So instead of one sign, you receive four pillars and a portrait of which elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) run strong in you and which are missing.

Why does the Chinese year start in February, not January?

The BaZi year doesn't begin at the calendar new year, or even at the lunar new year. It begins at Lichun, the solar term when the Sun reaches 315 degrees of celestial longitude, usually around February 4th. That moment shifts slightly from year to year, so someone born in January or early February may belong to the previous animal year. We calculate the true crossing from the Sun's real position, so your year pillar is exact.

What is a Day Master?

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar, the element and polarity that represent you at your core. If your year pillar speaks of your outer world and your month pillar of your work and roots, the Day Master is simply you. Yours might be the tall oak or the climbing vine, the blazing sun or the candle flame. Your free reading interprets this pillar in full.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Your year, month, and day pillars come from your birth date and place alone, so your chart holds real meaning even without a birth time. The hour pillar, which speaks of legacy and what you leave behind, is the only one that needs the clock. If you don't know your time, we simply leave that pillar open, and the other three still tell most of your story. On the rare birthday when a solar month (or the solar year) turns during the day, your time also decides that pillar, and we show you both possibilities rather than guess.
