True solar time
Clock time is a convenience shared by a whole time zone; the Sun keeps its own time at each place. Classical BaZi reads the hour by the Sun, so this site does three things. First, it removes any daylight saving hour. Second, it shifts the clock 4 minutes for every degree your birth place lies east or west of its time zone's center line. Third, it adds the equation of time, the small drift that makes the Sun run up to about 16 minutes fast or slow across the year. Example: someone born at 7:10 PM summer time in a town 10 degrees west of its zone's center line becomes 6:10 PM standard time, then 5:30 PM after the 40-minute shift. A small equation-of-time correction leaves it in the Rooster's watch, not the Dog's.
The fourth pillar
A BaZi chart has four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Most people know only the first, because the year animal is printed on calendars and restaurant placemats. The hour pillar needs an exact birth time, and many people never ask for it or simply don't know it, so their hour animal stays hidden. Many popular Western books turn three of the pillars into three animals. The outer animal, from the year, is how the world first sees you. The inner animal, from the month, is your heart and how you love and work. The secret animal, from the hour, is the private self, your plans, the people you raise or teach, and your later years. Your secret animal is the animal that rules the double-hour of your birth, the hour pillar of your BaZi chart. In a popular way of reading the pillars, it stands for your private self: who you are when no one is watching, how you make plans, how you raise or teach others, and the shape of your later years. To find it, you need your birth time and place, which this site converts to the Sun's own time.
Your zodiac sign is your year animal, shared by everyone born in the same Chinese year. Popular books call it your outer animal: the face the world sees first. Your secret animal comes from your birth hour, so people born in the same year can have any of twelve secret animals. It describes the more private side of you, and it can agree with your sign, contrast with it, or simply stand apart.
Classical BaZi reads the hour by the Sun at your birth place, and clocks don't follow the Sun exactly. We remove any daylight saving hour, adjust 4 minutes for each degree your birth place lies east or west of its time zone's center line, and add the equation of time, which can move the Sun up to about 16 minutes fast or slow. Often the animal stays the same, but a birth near a boundary, or during daylight saving time, can land in the neighboring watch.
If your solar birth time falls within a few minutes of a watch boundary, small uncertainties matter: a rounded hospital time, a slightly different location, or the exact minute on the certificate. We show a note when this happens and name the neighboring animal. Read both descriptions and notice which one sounds like you at home, alone, when no one is watching. Your own recognition is a fair guide.
Many popular Western books read three animals from a BaZi chart. The outer animal comes from your birth year; it is your familiar zodiac sign and shows how the world first sees you. The inner animal comes from your birth month and speaks to your heart: what you need, how you love and how you work from the inside. Together with the secret animal from your birth hour, they give a fuller picture than one sign alone.
You can still learn your outer and inner animals, which need only your birth date. To find the hour, look at your birth certificate or the long-form version if the short one leaves it out, ask a parent or older relative, or contact the hospital where you were born for a record. Even an approximate time helps; if it falls near a boundary, read both neighboring animals and see which fits.
