Tai Sui
Tai Sui, the Grand Duke Jupiter, whose name means Great Year, began in early Chinese astronomy. Jupiter, called the Year Star or Sui Xing, takes about twelve years to circle the sky, moving through one branch a year. To match the twelve branches of the calendar, astronomers imagined a counter-body moving the opposite way, and that counter-body became Tai Sui. Folk religion later gave each of the sixty years of the sixty-year cycle its own general, one deity on duty each year. People keep customs around him: an tai sui, an offering at a temple near the New Year with thanks given before the year ends; wearing red, ideally a gift; and avoiding major digging or renovation in the direction where Tai Sui sits. We see him as weather to plan with, never a curse.
The wheel of twelve
From strongest to mildest, there are five ways to offend Tai Sui. Zhi is the same animal as the year. Chong, the clash, sits straight across the wheel and brings movement and change. Xing, the punishment, is friction from within or from rules. Hai, the harm, means small frictions and misunderstandings. Po, the break, means plans that crack and need mending. Two meetings are kind: liu he, the six harmony, the year's secret friend, and san he, the three-harmony trine, its natural allies. A branch can meet the year in more than one way at once.
