The essence
Astrology sorts the twelve signs into three modalities, which describe how a sign acts. Cardinal begins. Mutable shifts. Fixed stabilizes and deepens. Ptolemy called these the "solid" signs. They are the foundation and the container, the slow build that comes from repetition and from refusing to scatter.
The four fixed signs share one trait, persistence. Where cardinal asks "what's next?" and mutable asks "what else?", fixed asks "how far can I take this?" The question is depth, not breadth.
The Sun moves through these signs roughly halfway between an equinox and a solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, where the system took shape, each season is most fully itself at that point. Their symbols are old as well. The bull, the lion, the eagle (an ancient emblem of Scorpio) and the human figure appear in Ezekiel's vision and later became the emblems of the four Gospel writers.
