The essence
Astronomically, the North Node, or ascending node, is where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path) moving from south to north. It has no mass and gives no light. The nodes slide backward through the zodiac, completing a full circle in about 18.6 years and spending roughly a year and a half in each sign. Eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon are near this axis.
That link to eclipses shaped the myths. In India the North Node is Rahu, the head of a demon who sipped the nectar of immortality before Vishnu cut him in two. The head still chases the Sun and Moon and swallows them during eclipses. Medieval European astrologers called it Caput Draconis, the Dragon's Head, and read it as a point of increase.
Modern astrologers treat it as your direction of growth. Where the South Node feels familiar, sometimes to the point of stagnation, the North Node feels foreign. Its sign shows the qualities you are learning. Its house shows the part of life where you practice them, often without applause.
