The essence
Astronomically, the Sun is a star. It is the source of nearly all the light and heat in our solar system and holds about 99.8 percent of its mass. Its light takes a little over eight minutes to reach us. From Earth, the Sun appears to travel through all twelve signs once a year along a path called the ecliptic, spending roughly a month in each. That is why your Sun sign depends on your birthday. It is also why the Sun returns to the same place in your chart each year, an event astrologers call the solar return.
In myth, the Sun is the hero and the king. The Greeks pictured Helios driving his chariot across the sky, a role later given to Apollo. The Egyptians saw Ra sailing his solar boat by day and through the underworld by night. Astrologically, the Sun represents the ego in its healthy sense: the organizing principle of who you are, the part of you that says I am and means it.
The Sun rules Leo, the fixed fire sign of creative self-expression. It is exalted in Aries, where the will to exist meets no resistance. It is in detriment in Aquarius and in fall in Libra.
