The essence
Venus is an inner planet, closer to the Sun than we are and faster in its orbit. As it catches up to Earth and passes between us and the Sun, it seems to back up against the background stars. The reversal is a trick of perspective, but it marks a real change in the sky: Venus vanishes from the evening sky and returns weeks later as the morning star.
Ancient sky watchers noticed. Babylonian scribes recorded Venus's appearances on clay tablets, and the Maya charted its cycle in the Dresden Codex. The Sumerian story of Inanna, who gives up her jewels and garments to descend into the underworld before rising again, echoes that disappearance. Five retrogrades every eight years trace a near-perfect pentagram around the zodiac.
Astrologically, the retrograde turns Venus inward. Instead of reaching for new pleasures, you review the ones you already have.
