The essence
The symbol is the crab: soft inside, armored outside, moving sideways toward what it wants rather than charging straight at it. In Greek myth, the crab Karkinos was sent by Hera to nip at Heracles while he fought the Hydra. Heracles crushed it underfoot, and Hera set it among the stars for its loyalty. That small, stubborn devotion to a cause is very Cancer.
The constellation itself is the faintest of the zodiac, yet it holds the Beehive Cluster, a soft smudge of stars visible on dark nights. The Tropic of Cancer takes its name from the era, about two thousand years ago, when the Sun stood in this constellation at the June solstice.
Astrologically, the Moon rules Cancer, so the sign runs on cycles rather than straight lines. Moods rise and fall, and a Cancer person often withdraws to recharge, then returns with full warmth. Jupiter is exalted here, which suits a sign that grows through generosity. This is the archetype of the parent, biological or not: the one who says I will feed you, and you will not be alone. Traditionally Cancer rules the stomach and breasts, organs of taking in and feeding. In your chart, the house Cancer occupies shows where you look for safety and where you protect hardest.
