The essence
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of time, limits, and authority that has to be earned. In the oldest astrology Saturn was the slowest visible planet, taking about 29 years to circle the Sun, so it became the keeper of long timelines. Capricorn shares that patience. It cares less about what you could do than about what you actually finish, and it knows that a plan without a schedule is only a wish.
Its symbol is the Sea-Goat, a goat with the tail of a fish. The image is ancient. Babylonian astronomers drew this constellation as a goat-fish linked to Ea, the god of fresh water and wisdom. Greek myth later tied it to Pan, who leapt into the Nile to escape the monster Typhon and transformed only halfway. The two halves make a useful picture. The goat climbs rocky slopes in plain view, while the fish knows the deep water no one sees. Real skill needs both the visible effort and the private reserves behind it.
About two thousand years ago the solstice Sun stood in the constellation Capricorn, which is why the southern line where the Sun turns back is still called the Tropic of Capricorn. The sign naturally governs the 10th house of career, reputation, and legacy. Where it falls in your chart is where you learn responsibility in the grown-up sense. Nobody is coming to do this for you, and that turns out to be a kind of freedom.
