Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the zodiac, and the Sun moves through it from about February 19 to March 20. It is the sign of softening edges: between you and other people, between waking and dreaming, between what happened and what you imagine. Where Pisces falls in your chart is where you soak things up, often before you realize you have.

It is mutable water. Cancer's water holds, Scorpio's water runs deep and still, and Pisces' water moves with the tide, taking the shape of whatever surrounds it. Pisces governs dreams, intuition, grief, mercy and imagination. It asks you to trust what you sense but cannot yet name, and to let go on purpose rather than by accident.

The essence

Pisces closes the circle that Aries opens. Aries is the first spark of a separate self. Pisces is the moment that self melts back into everything else, carrying a little of all eleven signs before it. Its glyph shows two fish swimming in opposite directions, joined by a cord. One pulls toward the world of rent, work and family dinners, the other toward the dream, the song and the escape. Living with both pulls is the Pisces skill.

The image comes from a Greek story. Aphrodite and her son Eros, fleeing the monster Typhon, leapt into a river and became fish, tying themselves together so they would not be separated. Traditional astrology gave Pisces to Jupiter, planet of faith and generosity. Modern astrology adds Neptune, discovered in 1846, planet of fog, film and longing. Venus is exalted here, which helps explain Pisces' tenderness.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun crosses Pisces in late winter, as ice softens before spring. Wherever Pisces sits in your chart, you are porous. You feel what others feel and care past the point of self-interest.

Shadow & light

At its best, Pisces is the friend who knows something is wrong from the way you said hello, and stays on the phone without rushing to fix it. It is the nurse who remembers a frightened patient's name, the songwriter who fits a feeling you could never put into words into three minutes of music, the parent who forgives a slammed door by breakfast. Its compassion does not keep score. It sees the person beneath the bad behavior and the beauty in what is cracked.

The difficulty is that same sensitivity without edges. Pisces can say yes to every favor and quietly resent it, cast itself as the martyr, or blur into a partner's moods until it no longer knows its own. When life gets loud, it may slip away into wine, scrolling, sleep or a fantasy of how things could be, instead of having the conversation that needs to happen. Without boundaries, the fish drowns in what it once blessed.

The work is learning that you can feel someone's pain without carrying it home, and that saying no can be a kindness too.

How it shows up

  • Love & relationship

You love by tuning in, sensing a partner's needs before they speak. The gift is deep tenderness. The risk is merging until you lose track of your own wants, or loving who you imagine rather than who is actually there.

  • Work & vocation

Pisces does well where imagination or care matters: art, music, film, nursing, therapy, ministry, charity work. It reads a team's mood instantly but can struggle with rigid schedules, so some outside structure often helps it shine.

  • Body & health

Pisces traditionally rules the feet, and modern astrologers link it to the lymphatic system and body fluids. It absorbs noise, stress and substances more than most signs, so rest, water, sleep and time alone genuinely restore it.

  • Spirit & soul

The natural mystic of the zodiac, Pisces finds meaning through dreams, prayer, meditation, music and quiet time near water. Its growth lies in remembering that spiritual life includes the body, the bills and the people in the next room.

What does Pisces mean in astrology?

Pisces is the twelfth sign of the zodiac, a mutable water sign the Sun moves through from about February 19 to March 20. It stands for compassion, imagination and the softening of boundaries between yourself and others. It governs dreams, intuition, art, mercy and the wish to belong to something larger than yourself, whether that is a cause, a faith, a relationship or a creative project.

What are Pisces' strengths and weaknesses?

Its strengths are deep empathy, creative vision, spiritual sensitivity and a gift for comforting people simply by being present. Its weaknesses show up when boundaries collapse: martyrdom, escapism through substances or fantasy, avoiding hard conversations, and losing your own identity in a partner, a job or someone else's crisis. The remedy is usually structure, rest and permission to say no.

What planet rules Pisces?

Modern astrology gives Pisces to Neptune, the planet of imagination, idealism, illusion and the dissolving of ego, discovered in 1846. Traditional astrology, which predates that discovery, assigns Pisces to Jupiter, emphasizing faith, generosity and trust in something benevolent. Many astrologers read both: Jupiter for the sign's open-handed kindness, Neptune for its dreaminess and fog.

Where do I find Pisces in my birth chart?

Look on your chart wheel for the glyph of two fish. Pisces may hold planets, your Ascendant or your Moon, or simply sit on the cusp of one of your houses, since everyone has it somewhere. The house it occupies shows the area of life, such as home, work or friendships, where you are asked to trust intuition, practice compassion and stay open to what you cannot control.
