The essence
Pisces closes the circle that Aries opens. Aries is the first spark of a separate self. Pisces is the moment that self melts back into everything else, carrying a little of all eleven signs before it. Its glyph shows two fish swimming in opposite directions, joined by a cord. One pulls toward the world of rent, work and family dinners, the other toward the dream, the song and the escape. Living with both pulls is the Pisces skill.
The image comes from a Greek story. Aphrodite and her son Eros, fleeing the monster Typhon, leapt into a river and became fish, tying themselves together so they would not be separated. Traditional astrology gave Pisces to Jupiter, planet of faith and generosity. Modern astrology adds Neptune, discovered in 1846, planet of fog, film and longing. Venus is exalted here, which helps explain Pisces' tenderness.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun crosses Pisces in late winter, as ice softens before spring. Wherever Pisces sits in your chart, you are porous. You feel what others feel and care past the point of self-interest.
