The Seven Authorities

Inner authority — illuminated illustration
Beneath the noise of the mind, every design carries one reliable place where yes and no actually live. These are the seven ways a body decides.

Emotional Authority

Any type with a defined Solar Plexus — about half of all people.

Clarity comes with time — there is no truth in the now.

Your decisions ripen; they are never picked fresh. The defined Solar Plexus moves in a wave — hope rising, melancholy settling — and any single moment's certainty is just one reading from one point on that curve. So the practice is patience made physical: when something asks for a yes, feel it today, sleep on it, feel it again in a different mood, and notice what stays constant underneath the shifting of feeling. Big decisions deserve the whole arc — days for most things, longer for the life-sized ones. Say the honest sentence out loud: 'I do not decide in the moment; I will tell you tomorrow.' The people worth having will wait. What you are waiting for is not certainty — the wave never delivers perfect certainty — but a settled, roomy calm: the same quiet yes, still there after the excitement and the doubt have both had their turn.

Sacral Authority

Generators and Manifesting Generators with an open Solar Plexus.

The gut answers in the moment — before the mind clears its throat.

Your truth is physical, present-tense, and faster than language. When life presents a choice, the Sacral responds instantly — energy rising toward yes, going flat for no — and everything after that first response is commentary. The craft is learning to catch the signal before the mind talks over it. Yes/no questions are the Sacral's native grammar, so use them: have someone ask you directly — 'Do you want this project?' 'Is this the apartment?' — and listen for the immediate uh-huh or uh-uh, the lean-in or the deadness, before any reasons arrive. Sounds are often truer than words for you; let yourself answer in grunts and hums when deciding — it keeps the head out of the channel. And honor the flat nothing: no response is a no, or at least a not-yet. The gut does not explain itself, and it does not need to. It has never once been trying to trick you.

Splenic Authority

Projectors and Manifestors with a defined Spleen (Solar Plexus and Sacral open).

One quiet ping, once — intuition in the present tense.

Your authority is the oldest awareness in the body: instinct, speaking now, softly, exactly once. A splenic knowing arrives as a subtle physical event — a ping, a prickle, a clean flash of yes or don't — in the very moment a decision presents itself, and it does not repeat, explain, or wait for the committee. Deciding well, for you, is mostly a matter of speed and quiet: keep enough stillness in your life that a faint signal can register, and act on the first flash before the mind convenes its hearing. This can look alarmingly spontaneous from outside — trust it anyway; the Spleen's whole jurisdiction is your safety and well-being, and it is never careless. It helps to review afterward, not before: looking back, you will find the first hit was right with uncanny consistency, and each remembered proof makes the next flash easier to obey.

Ego Authority

A rare few Manifestors (Ego-Manifested) and Projectors (Ego-Projected) whose defined Heart leads the chart.

What does your heart have the will for? Want is the compass.

Yours is the rarest compass and the most disarmingly honest: desire and will. The question that decides things for you is not 'what should I?' or 'what would be wise?' but 'what do I actually want — and do I have the will to see it through?' The Heart is a motor that burns real fuel on real commitments, so a promise your will is not behind is a debt you cannot service. Practice asking the wanting question shamelessly, out loud if it helps — for the Ego-Projected especially, hearing yourself talk about what you want reveals the truth of it; for the Ego-Manifested, the want tends to announce itself and then asks you to inform the affected before you move. Track your own fuel gauge honestly: is my heart in this, today, at the price asked? If yes, commit and keep it — a kept promise is this authority's glory. If the will is not there, no argument of duty makes it appear.

Self-Projected Authority

Projectors whose G center connects to the Throat, with Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, and Heart all open.

Truth arrives in your own voice — talk it out and listen to yourself.

Your truth lives in your voice, and you meet it by speaking. The G center — identity and direction — wires straight to your Throat, which means your deciding organ is, quite literally, hearing yourself talk. Silent deliberation just recirculates the mind; the knowing only surfaces on the way out. So build the practice around sounding boards: two or three trusted people who understand the assignment — not to advise, but to listen while you talk around a decision, and perhaps to echo back what they heard. As you speak, listen to yourself the way an audience would: notice where your voice comes alive, where it flattens, what you say when you stop being careful. The compass question is identity, not logic: does this direction feel like me? Will this let me be more myself, or less? When your own spoken words ring true in your own ears — that is the yes.

Mental (Environment) Authority

Projectors defined only in the Head, Ajna, and/or Throat — the mental Projectors.

No inner authority in the body — clarity comes through environment and trusted ears.

You are the rare being with no authority below the neck — no motor, no gut, no wave, no ping to consult. Nothing is wrong: your design simply locates wisdom outside the body, in two places. First, environment. Your open centers read every room with extraordinary fidelity, so where you consider a decision changes what you can see of it; the same question feels genuinely different in the right café than in the wrong office. Get physically comfortable, in places that feel good, before weighing anything that matters. Second, resonance over time. Talk the decision through with a small circle of trusted people — not for their verdicts, but because hearing yourself process it, in different settings, over enough days, lets a consistent lean emerge from the noise. You are not listening for a lightning bolt. You are listening, patiently, for the answer that keeps sounding like itself everywhere you take it.

Lunar Authority

Reflectors — the one type with no defined centers at all.

Wait a full cycle of the Moon — clarity is a monthly harvest.

Your authority is the Moon itself. With every center open, your inner landscape reconfigures as the Moon transits the wheel, lighting different gates day by day on a cycle that repeats, faithfully, about every twenty-nine days. That repetition is your consistency — the one clock in your design that never changes. So for decisions that matter, wait out one full cycle. Feel the question early in the cycle and note the answer; feel it a week later, from what will genuinely seem like a different self; keep visiting it as the month turns. Talk it through with trusted people along the way — Reflectors clarify out loud — and in different places, since environment colors everything you sample. What you are watching for is the through-line: the leaning that persists across all the Moon's weathers. When a whole cycle has turned and the same quiet answer is still standing there, it is yours.

the seven, in brief

Common Asks

What is Emotional Authority in Human Design?
The most common inner authority, held by anyone with a defined Solar Plexus — roughly half of humanity. Emotional beings make reliable decisions only over time: feeling a question at several points on their emotional wave and committing when a settled clarity persists beneath the moods.
How long should someone with Emotional Authority wait?
Long enough to feel the question in more than one emotional state — overnight for everyday choices, days or weeks for major ones. The signal is not perfect certainty (the wave never grants it) but a calm, consistent leaning that survives both the high and the low.
What is Sacral Authority?
The in-the-moment gut authority of Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Solar Plexus is open. The defined Sacral responds to life — especially yes/no questions — with immediate energetic signals: a rising 'uh-huh' for yes, a flat 'uh-uh' or nothing at all for no.
What is Splenic Authority?
The in-the-moment intuitive authority of Projectors and Manifestors with a defined Spleen and an open Solar Plexus and Sacral. Truth arrives as a single, quiet, instantaneous knowing — an instinctive ping about what is healthy and right — that never repeats itself.
What is Ego Authority in Human Design?
A rare inner authority belonging to Manifestors (Ego-Manifested) and Projectors (Ego-Projected) whose defined Heart is the highest-ranking center in their authority chain. Decisions run on honest desire and willpower: what the heart truly wants and has the will to complete.
What is Self-Projected Authority?
A Projector authority in which the G (identity) center connects to the Throat while the motors and Spleen are open. Truth emerges through speaking: these Projectors discover what is right for them by talking decisions out loud to trusted listeners and hearing their own voice.
What is Mental (Environment) Authority?
The Projector authority with no defined centers below the Throat — no bodily yes/no signal at all. Decisions clarify externally instead: through being in the right environments and talking things over with trusted sounding boards until a consistent truth emerges over time.
What is Lunar Authority in Human Design?
The Reflector's authority. With all nine centers open, a Reflector's experience shifts with the Moon's roughly 29-day transit of the chart — so major decisions are held for a full lunar cycle, talked through with trusted people, until a consistent answer persists across the month.
