The Heavenly Stems
The upper character of every pillar is one of ten Heavenly Stems — the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form. They are the sky-layer of the chart: the visible weather over each pillar's ground.
Ten stems, five elements
The Heavenly Stems are a cycle of ten signs used in Chinese timekeeping since the oldest written records. Astrologically, each stem is one of the five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — expressed through one of the two polarities of yin and yang. Yang wood is the timber and the trunk; yin wood the vine and the reed. Yang fire is the sun; yin fire the lamp-flame. And so on through yang and yin earth, metal, and water: ten distinct temperaments from five raw materials.
How stems work in a chart
Every pillar in a BaZi chart pairs one stem above with one Earthly Branch below. The stems are read as the chart's visible, active layer — what shows, what acts — while the branches hold the ground beneath. Stem and branch advance together in a sixty-step cycle (ten stems x twelve branches meet again every sixty), which is why the tradition speaks of sixty-year cycles and why a full pillar, like 2026's yang-fire-over-horse, repeats only once a lifetime.
One stem outranks all others in your chart: the stem of the day pillar, your Day Master — the element that means you.

What are the ten Heavenly Stems?
The five elements each in two polarities: yang and yin wood, yang and yin fire, yang and yin earth, yang and yin metal, yang and yin water. Traditional Chinese names them jiǎ through guǐ; our pages use the element-and-polarity names for clarity.
Are stems more important than branches?
Neither outranks the other — they're layers. Stems show the visible, active element of a pillar; branches carry the animals, the seasons, and the deeper ground. A full reading always takes the pair together.
Why do stems matter for the year's animal?
The stem gives each animal year its element and polarity. 2026 is not just a Horse year — it's a yang fire Horse year, which last occurred sixty years earlier. The stem is what makes each cycle of an animal distinct.
Which stem is my Day Master?
The stem of your day pillar. It's the reference point the whole BaZi chart is read around — every other element in the chart helps, drains, or challenges it. The free calculator identifies yours automatically.
