Yin & Yang

the two breaths of everything

Beneath the animals, stems, and elements runs the oldest idea in the system: every quality has two breaths — yang, the active and outward; yin, the receptive and inward. Neither is stronger. Nothing is only one.

Two breaths, one circle

Yin and yang are not good and evil, nor female and male in any simple sense. They are complementary phases of every process: yang is the expanding stroke — daylight, action, the trunk, the flame; yin is the gathering stroke — night, rest, the root, the ember. Each contains the seed of the other, and each becomes the other at its extreme, which is why the classic symbol holds a dot of each colour inside its opposite.

In astrology this is a working tool, not philosophy for its own sake: it doubles the five elements into the ten Heavenly Stems. Yang fire (the sun) and yin fire (the lamp) share an element and differ entirely in style.

Polarity in the chart

Everything in a BaZi chart carries polarity. The stems alternate yang and yin through their cycle of ten; the branches alternate around their wheel of twelve, which is why the animals do too — Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog are yang years; Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig are yin. Because stems and branches advance together, every year, month, day, and hour pairs a polarity with an element — 2026's yang fire Horse is yang twice over, a loud year by construction.

A chart's overall lean matters: heavily yang charts tend to act first and rest badly; heavily yin charts perceive deeply and can hesitate. The reading, as always, is about balance rather than verdicts.

Seeing your balance

The free BaZi calculator shows the polarity of all eight of your characters, and your Day Master's own yin or yang colours everything about how your core element behaves. For how polarity plays through the five elements in daily life, see the Five Elements.

Yin & Yang FAQs

Is yang better than yin?

No — the system treats them as equally necessary phases, like exhale and inhale. A chart of all yang would burn out; a chart of all yin would never begin. Every reading is about the mix.

Which animals are yin and which are yang?

Yang: Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog. Yin: Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig. The polarity alternates around the wheel, so the animals simply inherit their branch's breath.

Can a person be yin if born in a yang year?

Easily — the year is one pillar of four. Your Day Master's polarity says far more about your personal style, and the full chart usually holds both breaths in some proportion.

How does yin-yang connect to the five elements?

Each element expresses in both polarities, giving the ten Heavenly Stems: yang wood and yin wood, yang fire and yin fire, and so on. Polarity is the style; the element is the substance.
