Two breaths in every character
Beneath the animals, the stems and the elements runs the oldest idea in Chinese astrology: every quality comes in two breaths. Yang is the outward, active one. Yin is the inward, receptive one. Neither outranks the other, and nothing stays only one. Here is how that pairing shapes the stems, the animals and your own chart.

Yin and yang are not good and evil, and they are not female and male in any simple sense. They are two phases of every process. Yang is the expanding stroke: daylight, action, the trunk pushing upward, the open flame. Yin is the gathering stroke: night, rest, the root holding on, the glowing ember. Each holds the seed of the other and turns into the other at its peak. That is why the familiar symbol puts a dot of each color inside its opposite.
In astrology this is a working tool, not philosophy for its own sake. Polarity doubles the five elements into the ten Heavenly Stems. Bing, yang fire, is the sun: broad and warm, shining on everyone at once. Ding, yin fire, is the candle flame: small and steady, lighting a single page. They share an element and differ completely in style.
Polarity in the chart
Everything in a BaZi chart carries a polarity. The stems alternate yang and yin through their cycle of ten: Jia yang, Yi yin, Bing yang, and so on. The branches alternate around their wheel of twelve, so the animals do too. Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey and Dog are yang. Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster and Pig are yin. Because stems and branches step forward together, a yang stem always meets a yang branch. Every year, month, day and hour therefore joins one polarity to an element. 2026, Bing Wu, the yang fire Horse, is yang twice over and fire twice over.
A chart's overall lean is worth noticing. Charts heavy in yang often like to move first and can find rest hard. Charts heavy in yin tend to take things in deeply and can pause at the threshold. These are tendencies to reflect on, not verdicts. The reading is always about balance.
Seeing your balance
Start with the free BaZi calculator. It lays out your four pillars. That makes eight characters when your birth time is known and six when it isn't, because an unknown time means no hour pillar. Each stem and branch has a fixed polarity, so you can simply count how many are yang and how many are yin.
Then look closely at one character: your Day Master, the stem of the day pillar. Its polarity colors how your core element behaves. A Jia Day Master grows like a great tree, upright and easy to see. A Yi Day Master climbs like a flowering vine, flexible and quick to find a path around obstacles. To go a layer deeper, the five elements tool also counts the hidden stems inside each branch. Those hidden stems carry their own polarities, so a single branch can hold a mix of both breaths.

Is yang better than yin?
No. Classical thinking treats them as equally necessary, like breathing out and breathing in. A chart of pure yang would be all push and no recovery. A chart of pure yin would gather without ever starting. Neither polarity is lucky or unlucky on its own. What matters in a reading is the mix, and how the yin and yang pieces of your chart work with each other.
Which Chinese zodiac animals are yin and which are yang?
Yang: Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey and Dog. Yin: Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster and Pig. Polarity alternates around the wheel of twelve branches, starting with the Rat as yang, so each animal inherits its branch's breath. On this site the year animal changes at Lichun, around February 4, rather than at the lunar new year. An early-February birthday can therefore belong to the previous animal.
Can a person be yin if born in a yang year?
Easily. The year is only one pillar of four. Its animal is often called your outer animal, the side other people meet first. Your Day Master, the stem of your day pillar, says far more about your personal style. The whole chart usually holds both breaths in some proportion, so someone born in a yang Dragon year can have a yin Day Master and plenty of yin elsewhere.
How does yin and yang connect to the five elements?
Each element appears in both polarities, which gives the ten Heavenly Stems: Jia and Yi for wood, Bing and Ding for fire, Wu and Ji for earth, Geng and Xin for metal, Ren and Gui for water. Think of the element as the substance and polarity as the style. Ren, yang water, is the ocean. Gui, yin water, is the still lake. Both are water, yet they move very differently.
