The essence
An opposition forms when two planets are roughly 180° apart, usually in signs directly across from each other. Most astrologers allow an orb of 6 to 8 degrees, and the tighter the orb, the louder the conversation. Opposite signs always share a modality (cardinal faces cardinal, fixed faces fixed, mutable faces mutable), while their elements complement each other: fire faces air, earth faces water. So the two sides want the same kind of thing but go after it by very different means.
The sky shows it plainly. Every Full Moon is a Sun–Moon opposition, with the Moon fully lit because it sits across from the Sun. When Mars or Jupiter reaches opposition, it rises as the Sun sets and shines at its brightest of the year. Ptolemy listed the opposition among the five classical aspects, and tradition read it as conflict and separation.
Its deeper meaning is visibility. Two planets in opposition cannot blend or ignore each other, so you see both. That awareness is the beginning of holding the tension until something new can grow from it.
