The essence
The idea of four elements goes back to the Greek philosopher Empedocles in the fifth century BCE, who named fire, earth, air, and water as the roots of everything. Aristotle described water as cold and moist, and later astrologers grouped the zodiac into four triplicities to match. Water's three signs sit 120 degrees apart. Cancer is ruled by the Moon. Scorpio is ruled by Mars and, in modern astrology, Pluto. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter and, in modern astrology, Neptune. Their natural houses, the fourth, eighth, and twelfth, deal with home, intimacy, and what happens out of sight.
Water stands for memory, emotion, dreams, and the parts of you that work below conscious thought. Jung called this the feeling function, which means judging experience by its emotional value rather than by logic. Water asks how something feels, and what your body already knows that your mind hasn't named. Cancer feels through belonging, Scorpio through intensity, and Pisces through empathy. Water's gift is receptivity. Its task is containment: holding feeling without being flooded by it.
