The essence
Neptune was the first planet found by mathematics rather than by chance. Astronomers noticed Uranus drifting from its predicted path. Urbain Le Verrier calculated where an unseen planet should be, and Johann Galle spotted it in 1846, close to that position. Neptune is an icy blue giant so far out that one orbit takes about 165 years. It was named for the Roman god of the sea, the counterpart of the Greek Poseidon, and its glyph is his trident.
Before 1846, Jupiter and Venus covered much of this territory. Modern astrology gives Neptune rulership of Pisces and links it to the twelfth house of retreat, hospitals, monasteries and what stays hidden. Its domain is everything that blurs edges: tides, music, film, prayer, alcohol, rumor, a con artist's charm. Where Saturn builds walls, Neptune erases them. Neptune teaches that transcendence and escapism are the same impulse, turned two different ways. Where it sits in your chart, you are porous, quick to sense a mood and slower to see a fact.
