The essence
Virgo is mutable earth, the moment when summer's abundance reaches the threshing floor and someone has to sort the crop. Its symbol is the Maiden holding an ear of wheat, and her story is less about innocence than competence. She knows which grain to keep and which to let go. She separates wheat from chaff, signal from noise, and what helps from what harms. Greek writers linked her to Astraea, goddess of justice, and to Demeter's harvest.
Mercury rules Virgo, and here the planet's quick mind turns practical. Gemini, Mercury's other sign, collects facts out of curiosity. Virgo puts them to work by observing, sorting, and improving. Think of editors, nurses, mechanics, herbalists, and bookkeepers.
The sign spans 150° to 180° of the ecliptic. The constellation Virgo holds Spica, one of the brightest stars in the sky, long tied to grain goddesses. Virgo's work is making things whole through many small, precise acts of care.
