Every channel in the bodygraph runs between two gates, one anchored in each of two centers, and no chart carries both ends of every sentence it starts. A single activated gate is what the tradition calls a hanging gate — half a circuit, reaching toward a partner it was born without. When your design holds one gate of a channel and another person's design holds the other, Human Design calls the meeting electromagnetic: two half-notes that become a chord only in each other's presence. Neither of you owns the channel. It does not exist in your chart, and it does not exist in theirs — it exists in the space between you, switching on when your auras come within reach and switching off again, completely, when you part. Of the five ways two designs can meet, this is the only one that literally manufactures definition neither person has alone: centers light up, energy flows down a wire that a moment ago was two dead ends.
Day to day, an electromagnetic connection feels like a light coming on when they walk in. Conversations catch fire out of nowhere; a room with both of you in it has a hum that a room with only one of you does not. The body registers the completion before the mind has an opinion about it — that inexplicable lean toward a particular person at a crowded table, the sudden fluency, the sense of being switched on. People with several electromagnetic channels between them often describe the early season of the relationship as being more themselves together than apart, and mechanically that is close to true: together, the connection defines centers and carries currents that each of you, alone, only reaches for. It is the classic signature of love at first sight, of friendships that ignite in a single evening, of creative partnerships that outproduce both members' solo work without either being able to say why.
The gift is completion. An electromagnetic channel gives the relationship access to a consistency neither chart brought to the table — a voice, a drive, a depth of feeling that exists only as a duet. Your hanging gate has spent a lifetime attracting people who carry its other half; this is the one theme in the chart that actively goes looking for company. These connections teach you, more vividly than any book, what your own gates were reaching toward all along. Held well, the spark matures from novelty into a shared instrument: something the two of you can reliably do, make, or feel together that genuinely cannot be done solo — and that neither of you loses by the other's presence, only gains.
The shadow is that the same wiring that attracts also chafes. Electromagnetic means the two of you complete each other and pull on each other in the same gesture — the half you supply is a half they cannot control, and vice versa, so the charge that felt like destiny in the first year can read as friction in the fifth: the same channel, the same two gates, the honeymoon and the argument sharing one wire. The way to live it well is to name it. Know which channels are electromagnetic between you and what each one carries; notice when the pull is running the show and call it what it is — mechanics, not mandate; and give each other room to remain the separate, gloriously incomplete charts you actually are. Chemistry denied runs you. Chemistry named is chemistry you can steer.
The spark was never an accident. It has an address in both of your charts — and knowing the address changes nothing about the magic, except that you can finally find your way back to it on purpose.
