The sky’s second readings

A retrograde is general weather until its loop crosses your chart. Then it becomes your season.

The backward walk

A retrograde is a review

No planet ever truly reverses. The backward walk is an illusion, seen as Earth and another planet pass each other on the great racetrack. Astrology has always read that illusion honestly: when a planet appears to double back, its themes double back too. A shelved plan reopens. An old message resurfaces. The season slows so something can be read a second time, and second readings are where the missed truth tends to live.

The personal question

It only matters if it touches you

Here is what the memes never mention: a retrograde is general weather until its loop crosses degrees where something sits in your birth chart. When it does, the planet walks over that exact point up to three times (arriving, reviewing, resolving), and the season becomes personally yours. The free check finds those crossings and dates every strike.

Retrogrades, answered

What does it mean when a planet is retrograde?

No planet ever truly moves backward. Retrograde is an optical illusion that happens when Earth overtakes another planet, or is overtaken by one, as both travel around the Sun at different speeds. Astrologically, that apparent loop marks a season of review. Whatever the planet rules slows down, doubles back, and asks to be reconsidered rather than pushed forward, a bit like rereading a letter before you send it.

How often is Mercury retrograde?

On average, Mercury goes retrograde three times a year for about three weeks each time, so its famous trickster season fills roughly nine weeks of every year. The outer planets retrograde for much longer stretches. Jupiter does so for about four months a year, and Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto for four to five months each. That's why at almost any moment at least one planet appears to be moving backward in the sky.

Does a retrograde affect everyone the same way?

No, and this is what most retrograde coverage misses. A retrograde is general weather that everyone shares. It becomes personal only when the planet's backward loop crosses a degree where something sits in your birth chart, such as your Sun or Moon. Then the planet passes over that exact point up to three times, and that triple visit is when a retrograde stops being a meme and becomes your season. This checker finds those crossings and dates them.

What are the shadow periods?

Before a planet stations retrograde, it first crosses the stretch of sky it will later walk back over. After it stations direct, it has to cross that same ground a third time. Those lead-in and lead-out stretches are the shadow periods. The season truly opens when the planet first enters that span and truly closes when it finally leaves, so a three-week Mercury retrograde can feel closer to two months from start to finish.

Which retrograde matters most?

For daily life, Mercury. It turns most often and rules the traffic of ordinary days: the stray email, the delayed train, the contract, the frozen laptop. For seasons of life, look to the slow planets. A Saturn or Pluto retrograde crossing a natal planet brings a months-long review of real structures, like a career or a home. The rule of thumb is simple: the retrograde that matters most is whichever one is actually touching your chart.

Is the retrograde checker free?

Yes. You can see every planet currently retrograde, the next Mercury retrograde with its exact station dates, and your personal crossings with every strike dated, all free and saved to a free account. If you'd like the whole year ahead, the Retrogrades 12-Month Reading ($5.66, one time) walks you through every window coming up and every loop that touches your chart.
