You cannot choose when the Sun returns, what sign it's in, or what the other planets are doing that day. But the return chart's angles and houses are built from the horizon — and the horizon belongs to a place. Be in a different city at the return moment and the same sky arranges itself into a different chart.

That makes your birthday location the one genuinely elective piece of a solar return. A return Sun destined for your 12th house in your home town might land in the 11th — or the 1st — from somewhere else on Earth. The planets keep their signs and aspects; the stage rotates beneath them.

How practitioners use it

The classic approach: cast the return for home, see what the year looks like, then test other locations for a chart whose emphasis matches what you want the year to be about — a strong 10th for a career push, a warm 5th or 7th for love, a sheltered 4th for putting down roots. What matters is where you are at the exact return moment; arriving the day before and leaving the day after is plenty.

Be honest with the technique. It tilts a year's emphasis; it does not delete a difficult sky or replace effort. "Weather, not fate" applies doubly here — you are choosing the weather you'd rather work in.
