Natal vs. Solar Return Chart
Your natal chart is who you are; the solar return is what this year asks of you. The craft is in reading them together — one laid over the other, each qualifying the other's sentences.
Two charts, two tenses
The natal chart is written once and never revised — the permanent grammar of a life. A solar return is written in the present tense and expires in twelve months. Confusing the two is the commonest beginner's error: a difficult return placement is a season, not a diagnosis, and a glorious one is an invitation, not an inheritance.
Kept in their tenses, the two charts answer different questions cleanly. Natal: what is this life about? Return: what is this year of it about? The return can only emphasise, time, and colour what the natal chart already contains.
The layering method
Three comparisons carry most of the meaning. First, place the return chart's planets into your natal houses — a return Sun in your natal 9th points the year abroad or toward study even before you read the return's own houses. Second, watch return angles meeting natal planets: a return Ascendant on natal Jupiter opens the year generously; a return Midheaven on natal Pluto makes the public year intense. Third, watch return planets on natal planets — the return Moon on your natal Sun, Venus returning to its own natal place, Saturn pressing a natal angle.
Where the two charts repeat a theme — the same house flagged twice, the same planet loud in both — believe the repetition. Doubled signals are the year's true headlines.
Letting the tools do the arithmetic
Layering two charts by hand is honest work, but you don't have to do it alone. Cast your natal chart and your solar return free, and Selene reads the return against your birth chart for you. Then start with the two loudest voices — the return Ascendant and the Sun's house — and let the rest of the chart argue around them.

Which chart should a beginner learn first?
The natal chart, without question — it's the language the return is written in. Once you can read your own birth chart comfortably, the solar return reads like a yearly letter in a familiar hand.
Can a solar return contradict my natal chart?
It can lean against natal tendencies for a year — a homebody's chart can catch a 9th-house travelling year. Astrologers read that as the year stretching you, not the sky contradicting itself.
Do return-to-natal aspects expire?
Yes — they live only while that return chart governs, birthday to birthday. Next year's return draws a fresh set. That expiry is what makes returns useful for timing.
Is the solar return more accurate than transits?
They're complementary. Transits time specific events through the year; the return chart gives the year its overall shape and setting. Most working astrologers read the return first, then track transits inside it.
