Once a year, close to your birthday, the Sun comes back to the exact degree, minute, and second it held when you took your first breath. The chart cast for that moment is your solar return: a fresh map of the sky for the year now opening in front of you.

Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you arrived. The solar return asks a smaller question, once a year: what does the sky look like when the Sun returns to the exact spot it held in that snapshot?
The Sun takes about 365.2422 days to complete its circle, not a neat 365, so the return moment shifts by a few hours each year. It often lands the day before or the day after your calendar birthday. It is a real astronomical event rather than a date on the calendar, and it happens at the same instant everywhere on Earth.
The chart cast for that instant is read as a map of your coming year. Its rising sign colors the year's overall style, and the house your Sun lands in shows where your vitality wants to go between this birthday and the next.
Weather, not fate
A solar return doesn't rewrite who you are. Your natal chart stays the foundation. Picture the return as the year's weather report laid over that foundation: a season of emphasis, not a verdict. When the return Sun sits in the 10th house, work and visibility tend to move to the front of your life. A 4th-house year tends to draw you home, toward family, a move, or the kitchen table. Neither is good or bad. Each one simply shows where the light is pointing.

Is a solar return the same as my birthday?
Close, but not exactly. The return is the precise moment the Sun reaches its natal degree, and that can fall the day before, the day of, or the day after your calendar birthday. The free tool works out the exact moment for you.
How long does a solar return chart last?
It runs from one return to the next, roughly birthday to birthday. Some astrologers sense the new year's themes stirring up to three months early, but the chart formally covers the stretch between returns.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Not to begin. The year's broad themes come through without one: the signs of the planets and how they meet. But the Sun moves about a degree a day, so without your birth hour the return moment itself can shift by up to half a day, and the rising sign and houses shift with it. Add an exact birth time and the whole chart comes into focus.
Does my location change my solar return?
Location never changes when the return happens, because that instant is the same worldwide. It does change the chart's angles and houses. That's why the tool asks where you'll be on your birthday, not where you were born.
