What Is a Solar Return?
Once a year, right around your birthday, the Sun returns to the exact degree, minute, and second it held at your first breath. The chart cast for that instant is your solar return — a fresh sky-map for the year ahead.
The Sun comes home
Your birth chart is a photograph of the sky at the moment you arrived. The solar return asks a smaller, annual question: what does the sky look like at the moment the Sun comes back to the exact spot it occupied in that photograph?
Because the Sun takes about 365.2422 days to complete its circle — not a tidy 365 — the return moment drifts a few hours each year, often landing the day before or after your calendar birthday. It is a real astronomical event, not a date on a calendar, and it happens at the same instant everywhere on Earth.
The chart cast for that instant is read as a map of your coming year: its rising sign colours the year's overall style, and the house your Sun lands in shows where your vitality wants to spend itself between this birthday and the next.
Weather, not fate
A solar return does not overwrite who you are — your natal chart remains the constitution. Think of the return as the year's weather report laid over that constitution: a season of emphasis, not a sentence. A year with the return Sun in the 10th house tends to pull work and visibility forward; a 4th-house year tends to pull you home. Neither is good or bad. Both are simply where the light is pointing.
Astrologers have read returns this way since the medieval period, when yearly charts — called revolutions — were a standard part of a birthday consultation. The technique survives because it is useful: one chart, one year, one set of themes you can actually plan around.

You can cast your solar return wheel free with our Solar Return tool — enter your birth details and where you'll be on your birthday, and Selene draws the wheel and reads the year ahead. Because the houses of the return chart depend on where you are when the Sun comes home, your location that day genuinely matters — which is why some people practise birthday relocation, choosing where to spend the day the year begins.
To go deeper, start with the return Ascendant and the house of the Sun — the two loudest voices in any solar return.

Is a solar return the same as my birthday?
Almost — but not exactly. The return is the precise moment the Sun reaches its natal degree, which can fall the day before, the day of, or the day after your calendar birthday. The free tool calculates the exact moment for you.
How long does a solar return chart last?
From one return to the next — roughly birthday to birthday. Some astrologers feel the incoming year's themes begin to stir up to three months early, but the chart formally governs the year between returns.
Do I need my exact birth time?
The Sun's return moment and the year's broad themes work without one. A precise birth time sharpens the houses and angles, letting the reading say more about which areas of life light up.
Does my location change my solar return?
Location never changes when the return happens — that instant is worldwide. It changes the chart's angles and houses, which is why the tool asks where you'll be on your birthday, not where you were born.
